About the STRUCTURE
RV awning aluminum profiles need to balance strength, weight, extrusion precision, surface finish, corrosion resistance, and cost efficiency. 6063-T5 is not the strongest aluminum alloy, but it is one of the most suitable choices for awning cassette housings, front bars, arms, and structural profiles.
Why 6063-T5 Aluminum?
6063 aluminum is widely used for precision-extruded profiles because it provides a practical balance of extrudability, dimensional consistency, surface quality, corrosion resistance and structural performance.
For an RV awning, aluminum profiles are not only structural components. The cassette housing, front bar, arms and support profiles are also visible parts that require accurate dimensions, clean surfaces and consistent finishing.
Compared with higher-strength structural alloys, 6063 is particularly suitable for awning profiles where complex extrusion, manageable weight, surface appearance and reliable structural performance must be considered together.
| Aluminum Alloy | Main Advantages | Main Limitations | Relevance to Awning Profiles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6063 | Good extrudability, consistent surface quality, corrosion resistance and suitable structural performance | Not intended for the highest structural loads | Well suited to cassette housings, front bars, arms and other visible awning profiles |
| 6060 | Excellent extrusion and surface-finishing quality | Generally provides slightly lower strength than 6063 | Suitable for appearance-focused profiles, while 6063 offers a stronger overall balance |
| 6005/ 6005A | Higher structural strength and good extrusion performance | More focused on structural applications than refined visible profiles | Suitable for components where higher load-bearing performance is required |
| 6061 | Higher strength, good machinability and broad engineering use | Less suited to some complex, thin-wall and appearance-focused extrusions | Suitable where machining or structural strength has higher priority |
| 6082 | High structural strength and good load-bearing performance | More engineering-oriented and less focused on refined visible profiles | More suitable for heavier structural applications |
The temper designation describes the condition of the aluminum after forming and heat treatment. It is not a different aluminum alloy.
T5 means that the aluminum profile is cooled after the elevated-temperature extrusion process and then artificially aged. This improves its mechanical performance and provides stable, repeatable properties without requiring the separate solution heat-treatment process associated with T6.
For RV awning profiles, T5 provides a practical balance of structural performance, dimensional stability, extrusion quality, surface finishing and manufacturing consistency.
| Alloy | Advantages | Limitations | Suitability for AWNINGS |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Fully annealed | Soft and highly formable, but with relatively low strength | Not normally selected as the final condition for structural awning profiles |
| T4 | Solution heat-treated and naturally aged | Good formability, but lower final strength than artificially aged conditions | More suitable when further forming is required after extrusion |
| T5 | Cooled after extrusion and artificially aged | Balanced strength, dimensional stability and production consistency | Our standard choice for RV awning profiles |
| T6 | Solution heat-treated and artificially aged | Higher strength, with additional processing and dimensional-control requirements | Suitable when higher structural strength is specifically required |
T6 is not automatically better than T5. The correct temper depends on the profile design, loading requirements, wall thickness, dimensional tolerance and subsequent manufacturing process.
For our awning cassette housings, front bars, arms and support profiles, T5 provides the performance balance required for reliable production and outdoor use.

Our Conclusion
For awning applications, the strongest alloy is not always the best choice. A good awning profile needs to be strong enough, light enough, accurately extruded, visually clean, corrosion-resistant, and stable during long-term outdoor use.
That is why we choose 6063-T5 aluminum profiles. It provides the most suitable balance for awning cassette housings, front bars, arms, and support profiles, especially where both structural performance and appearance matter.
About the FABRIC
RV awning fabric needs to balance weather resistance, water protection, dimensional stability, tear strength, easy maintenance, and long-term outdoor durability. PVC fabric is selected not only for its waterproof performance, but also because it is one of the most practical materials for awnings exposed to changing outdoor conditions.
Why 480 gsm PVC Fabric?
Awning fabric is exposed directly to sunlight, rain, moisture, dirt, wind, and repeated opening and closing. For vehicle awnings, the fabric must do more than look good — it needs water resistance, dimensional stability, tear resistance, easy cleaning, surface durability, and long-term outdoor performance.
At the same time, motorhome and caravan awnings require a fabric that balances durability with manageable weight. It must withstand travel, outdoor exposure, and repeated rolling without adding unnecessary load to the roller, arms, and vehicle-mounted structure.
PVC fabric is a practical choice for motorhome and caravan awnings because it provides a strong balance of water protection, easy maintenance, surface durability, manageable weight, and stable performance in changing outdoor conditions.
It is especially suitable for travel use, where the awning may face rain, dust, road dirt, moisture, repeated rolling, and frequent operation.
| Fabric Type | Best For | Key Characteristics | Our View |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC Fabric | Motorhome and caravan awnings | Water-resistant, dimensionally stable, easy to clean and suitable for repeated rolling | Our preferred choice for standard vehicle awnings |
| Acrylic Fabric | Garden awnings selected premium applications | Textile appearance, rich color options and good outdoor comfort | Suitable where appearance, texture and shading comfort have higher priority |
| Polyester Fabric | Garden awnings, cost-sensitive applications | Flexible and cost-effective, with performance depending heavily on coating quality | A practical option when the correct coating and specification are selected |
| Oxford Fabric | Covers, bags and light-duty outdoor products | Lightweight, flexible and economical | Not our preferred material for permanently exposed awning canopies |
| Canvas | Traditional outdoor textile products | Natural textile appearance and heavier fabric character | Requires more attention to moisture absorption, cleaning and maintenance |
| Fabric Weight | Advantages | Limitations | Suitability for Awning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 350–420 gsm | Lighter, lower cost, easier to roll | Lower tear resistance and durability; less stable for long-term outdoor exposure | Suitable for light-duty or cost-sensitive applications |
| 480 gsm | Stronger durability, better stability, good water resistance, practical for daily outdoor use | Slightly heavier than entry-level fabrics | Best-balanced choice for standard motorhome and caravan awnings |
| 550+ gsm | Heavy-duty feel, stronger surface body | Heavier, may increase stress on arms, roller, and operation system | More suitable for special heavy-duty uses, not always necessary for standard awnings |
Fabric weight is only one part of overall performance. Reinforcement structure, yarn density, coating formulation, layer adhesion and manufacturing quality also affect durability, water resistance and repeated rolling performance.

Our Conclusion
There is no single fabric that is best for every awning. The right fabric depends on the application.
For motorhome and caravan awnings, we choose 480 gsm PVC fabric because it provides a practical balance of durability, manageable weight, water resistance, stain resistance, easy cleaning, and repeated rolling performance.
For garden awnings, acrylic and polyester fabrics are better suited when colour variety, textile texture, shading comfort, and home exterior design are more important.
